The student masonry bridge competition is intended to engage students and demonstrate the possibilities offered by concrete masonry. The competition encourages direct interaction between students and professionals in the concrete masonry industry. Students will also be able to connect with mentors within The Masonry Society and possible future employers.
The Student Masonry Bridge Competition consists of two competitions. The first is a hands-on experience that provides students with the opportunity to design and construct a masonry bridge or arch with scaled-down blocks. The second competition challenges students to consider how they would scale this project up using actual concrete masonry units.
Prizes will be awarded for each competition.
Competition 1: Masonry Bridge/Arch Team Competition
Students will be assigned to teams, which may also include TMS mentors and industry representatives. Teams will design and build a masonry bridge or arch using the materials provided.
Bridges will be load tested during a pizza party reception during the TMS Annual Meeting.
Competition 2: Masonry Team Presentation Competition
Students will present their ideas on how scaling this project up and using actual concrete masonry units in construction of a full-sized bridge/arch would differ from their construction of this model.
TMS will be hosting the first Student Masonry Bridge Competition at its 2024 Annual Meeting.
